Vegan Grocery Store Items to Try

The most common question I get when people learn I’m on a plant based diet is “What can you eat?”. Well, the short answer is a freakin’ lot…😂Grocery store visits shouldn’t fee restrictive or daunting, and it’s possible to be creative without breaking the budget. In fact, I find trips are significantly less expensive, include healthier options & are much more enjoyable than they used to be. Here’s a growing list of top products I frequently buy for my family at the grocery story that are plant based.

Vegan Breads

Artesano Bread

Why You Should Try It: If you’re looking for an affordable natural, plant based bread that can be your go-to for grilled ‘cheeze’ or French toast, look no further. This bread is 100% vegan 🌱, bakery quality, and easy to find unlike many coveted vegan certified brands. They also have buns!

Why You Should Try It: This brand has several safe options including corn, flour, & whole wheat that will leave any tortilla lover satisfied. While not 100% vegan, their parent company Gruma Corporation is committed to transparency to ensure food safety and help tackle slavery & human trafficking so I think that’s something we can all get behind.

Vegan Egg & Dairy Replacement Items

JUST Egg

Why You Should Try It: It’s comparable to ‘eggbeaters’ with the main difference being that no innocent lil’ chicks were harmed. Because they use 98% less water, it’s become one of the most sustainable protein sources in the world. The consistency is perfect for ‘egg’ scrambles, sandwiches, & works great in recipes that call for egg as a binder (mainly fried foods). This is a favorite among vegans & omnivores alike in my network and I haven’t heard anyone say “I really miss eating chicken eggs” after trying it.
Where You Can Get It: Walmart, Sprouts

Follow Your Heart – Vegan Egg

Why You Should Try It: This is great if you’re looking for the fluffy scramble to try on top of avo toast or want to give a softer feel to baked goods. Its perfect if you don’t use ‘eggs’ a lot because it can be stored in the pantry for longer periods of time. The best part is that you only need water to get it started. Warning… It totally smells like sulfur, but it works great!
Where You Can Get It: Walmart, Amazon, Sprouts Farmers Market

Earth Balance Spread

Why You Should Try It: This can be your replacement for everything from spread, to what you’re using in baking. They use ethically sourced palm oil and have soy-free & whipped options. This is a major step up from alternative dairy brands I grew up with like ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter’ and contain saturated fats instead of trans-fat like margarine.
Where You Can Get It: Walmart, Sprouts Farmers Market, Smart & Final Extra, Stater Bros., Ralphs Grocery, Jimbo’s Naturally, Amazon, Meijer, Safeway, Albertsons
Website

Follow Your Heart Vegan Cheese

Why You Should Try It: As cute as the name sounds, it’s the closest thing to dairy cheese that it tastes & melts the same. Unlike many other non-dairy cheeses, their slices can be eaten hot/cold. I was never really a fan of cheese before going vegan but their flavors are unreal! In addition to saving then precious animals & inspiring hope for future generations, this brand is committed to zero waste, which is just another reason to support them.

Vegan Protein Items

Daring Foods Vegan ‘Chicken’

Why You Should Try It: What if there was a way for you to help stop contributing to the 9 billion chickens that are killed in the poultry industry each year? This brand has the faux meat feel down with a “pull apart” consistency that you can’t resist. It pairs well with any recipe and comes in Original, Cajun and Lemon & Herb flavors. The best part is that this is actually a protein that holds up well under pressure. You can grill it, bake it, or saute it so why not give it a try in your next recipe?
Where You Can Get It: Costco, Sprouts, Walmart, Gelson’s, Fresh Thyme Market, Bristol Farms, Erewhon, Roots Market, & Wegmans
Website

Gardein Chipotle Lime Crispy Fingers

Why You Should Try It: I absolutely love Gardein as a brand! Their products are easy to prepare and affordable compared to other plant based proteins. No Evil Foods – Pit Boss BBQ Pulled ‘Pork’

Why You Should Try It: This plant based version take on ‘pulled pork’ is a great base for salads, sandwiches, stir fry dishes & more. Website

Morningstar Farms – Veggie Dogs

Why You Should Try It: While I wasn’t a fan of ‘hot dogs’ previously, I think everyone secretly has a love for the novelty of corn dogs that seems almost lost with childhood. Even after watching ‘How It’s Made”, I still loved getting a corn dog at the County fair back in Ohio. By comparison, these are by far the best vegan option for them that I’ve found to date. (Side note: If you’re anything like me, you should be aware that they are not packaged separately beyond the box. Don’t freak out, they still taste great!).

My boyfriend’s favorite sauce is the Tikka Masala which goes great over veggies, falafel & rice. It’s an easy weeknight meal that we always look forward to and will pair with vegan naan bread to complete the experience. Be aware that not all sauces are 100% plant based, so it’s very important to check labels before purchasing.
Where You Can Get It: Albertsons, Ralphs, Whole Foods Market, Vons, Sprouts Farmers Market, Walmart, & Target
Website

Organic Ketchup

Why You Should Try It: Along with this, Heinz Tomato Ketchup is vegan friendly, but I just prefer the more natural taste of this brand. Most ‘organic’ ketchups are fair game because of their ethically sourced sugars not filtered through bone char from cattle.

Why You Should Try It: These snacks are so light & breezy you could eat a whole bag in one sitting! My boyfriend and I were actually in disagreement on whether this brand was specifically for babies, but after looking it up, I found that it was an unintended marketing result. If you love cheese puffs and have ever wondered what they’d taste like in a peanut butter flavor, you should swipe a bag of these next time you’re at the store! They are marketed as ‘all natural’, though palm oil rank & fillers do rank high on the ingredients list. On a more positive note, this brand is a staple in Israeli culture, and has other exciting varieties to try!

Stay Tuned For More Items to Try

Items in this post are either 100% plant based or vegan friendly meaning the check almost every box except for being officially certified! Always reference the ingredients before you try anything as companies are frequently changing ingredients/preparation methods (and do not have to notify customers)… Frequent items to watch out for are sugars, palm oils & dyes as they may not be ethically sourced (i.e. Most sugar in North America is filtered using bone char, the palm industry is killing animals & their habitat, and dyes are often tested on animals). On top of that, there are also different requirements for various countries so items may or may not be used even though they are listed to cover all of their shipping destinations.

Navigating life’s purchases through an unwavering ethical lens may seem near impossible with the endless possibilities. It’s ultimately up to you to decide how far down the metaphorical ‘rabbit hole’ you’d like to go in respect to your health & human decency. We’ll dive deeper into the importance of consumer knowledge in another post. For now, this is made to be an easy list for you to refer to when looking for new staple items you can find at many popular stores. Places I typically shop at include: Sprouts, Walmart, Ralphs & Amazon. Check back every now and then for updates!

That’s all for now!

Stay tuned for more updates after future grocery trips! If you have any favorites or suggestions to try, leave them in the comments section below!

As always, thanks for your love & support.

‘Til next time!

Emerald May, The Plant Based Bae

Hi! My name is Emerald May and I’m The Plant Based Bae. I was born and raised in the Midwest, and have called Southern California home for the past seven years. In 2018, I decided to switch to a vegan diet which led to me improving my overall quality of life and learning a lot about health & humanitarianism. Since then, I’ve had countless conversations with vigorous vegans and curious omnivores to share what I’ve learned along the way.
