Vegan Restaurant Options in Oceanside, California

Locally Owned Restaurants in
Oceanside, California with Vegan Options

If you’ve never been to Oceanside… it’s a beautiful coastal city located in California directly between Los Angeles and San Diego, bordering several gates of Camp Pendleton. It’s known for it’s O’side original authenticity, thriving art & surfer culture, and passionate business owners. What you might not know is that it’s home to a newly emerging vegan restaurant scene. Many restaurants I choose to support are either mom n’ pop owned, 100% vegan or choose to operate in a sustainable way…or all of the above! You’ll notice a few franchises listed that are locally owned. Don’t forget that they still need your love right now too!

Here’s a growing list of restaurants, food stands & coffee shops I’ve tried in Oceanside, California that are 100% vegan and either have listed vegan options on their menus or are places that I’ve found my own personal hacks at & how to order. I’ve curated content over the past two years by documenting my experiences navigating the world through a plant based lens & am updating with each new dining experience. Enjoy!

Eve Vegan Eats

Location: 507 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054
Atmosphere: This is such a cozy open space with a fun, bohemian feel. I stop in often and always seem to notice new décor & trinkets being added. This is always a fun place for a meeting or date when you’re trying to unwind without interruption & I absolutely adore their cute dishware.
Pro tip: If you’re getting takeout, check out the menu online & order ahead so you can save time.
What to Try: Their Vegan Margherita & Peppadew Pesto flatbread pizzas frequent favorites and you absolutely must try it with seitan or coconut bacon for the full effect. When I’m out for lunch, I’ll grab a pulled Jackfruit Sandwich or Havana Affair Bowl (coconut cilantro lime brown rice, quinoa, cuban style black beans, roasted yams, picked Cuban slaw, wakame chuka, plantains & cuban mojo sauce). They have a broad selection of kombucha flavors on tap, so don’t be afraid to try something outside your comfort zone!

The Green House Oceanside

Location: 212 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054
Atmosphere: This place is filled with luscious green leafy plants and eco-conscious retail items. We walked around before ordering and found everything from cute, inspiring t-shirts to coffee cups with little creatures hidden at the bottom making it the perfect stop for your next gift for your animal/earth activist friends (or yourself!). Their green chairs make the perfect cozy spot to wait while your food is being prepared and the staff is super friendly, ready to answer any questions you have about the menu.
What to Try: I tried the Bird on the Wire (ciabatta roll, chk’n patty, american cheeze, ranch, lettuce, pickle, onion, tomato & avocado) & A got the classic 53rd & 3rd (corn rye, Unreal Corn’d Beef in Au’ Jus, sauerkraut, 1,000 island, pickle, pepperoncini, romaine, pepperjack). We both added extra vegan bacon for $1 (worth it!!) and could barely finish our sandwiches in one sitting because they were so filling!

The Plot

Location: 1733 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054
Atmosphere: This place feels exactly the way it looks & sounds: fun, plant-filled & bright with phenomenal dishes while keeping humans in check about the animals and the earth by being a zero-waste vegan restaurant. The staff always has superb recommendations and it seems like there’s always a new snack from the chef to try while we wait on our food. It’s a great safe & easy choice for vegans or when it you want to step up the dining experience for any occasion.
What to Try: This place is date night approved. Whenever ‘A’ & I are craving a night out and something really fun, we’ll run down here for our favorites like the chronic (cräb, spicy tüna & avocado – tempura fried, topped with spicy mayö & sweet n’ spicy citrus) veggie sushi options, veggie stir fry (agave cashew glace, “dirty rice,” tofu, yellow pickles) & chickën & waffles, which is A’s favorite and the perfect choice for any meat lover looking to convert for a night. A frequent favorite of mine to get as an appetizer is their elote (mexican street corn with quephaux fresco, yum yum & cilantro). I recently went back and tried their biscuits and gravy (fresh biscuits, country gravy, fried chickën) because it totally reminded me of something my mom would make back home in Ohio. While their take offered a more “chik’n fried” method versus the use of sausage I was accustomed to before becoming vegan, it which was like having a savory little bite of home, itself.

Thankfully, they have multiple drive-thru windows to serve you when you don’t feel like leaving the car and everyone in line stays patient because they know Alberto’s is always serving up something good.
What to Try: Order the bean burrito with french fries & guacamole. No other modifications needed because their beans & fries are confirmed to be made without animal products. Barrel Republic

Location: 215 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054
Atmosphere: I am so on board with their pay-what-you-pour concept! My first experience at one was this Oceanside location on historic 101 Coast Hwy. Upon walking in you’ll be given a wristband tied to your credit/debit card to manage your food and drink tab. From there, you’ll get to walk right up to barrels full of rotating craft beer, wine and even kombucha!
What to Try: Aside from the ever-changing beverage options, there is a small selection of vegan options including the Fresh Tomato & Avocado Soup, Ironman Salad (spinach, kale, almonds, ground flaxseed, quinoa, cranraisins, strawberries, & tumeric-maple vinaigrette), Thai Peanut Salad (field greens, napa cabbage, carrots, green onions, red pepper, red cabbage, chopped roasted peanuts & spicy thai dressing), my personal favorite the Vegan Wild Mushroom “French Dip” (portobello, oyster, & button mushrooms with sautéed onion, spinach, vegan cheese, and porcini au jus on a hoagie bun).

Beach Hut Deli

Location: 280 Mission Ave #105, Oceanside, CA 92054
Atmosphere: This place practically oozes cool surfer vibes with eye-appealing surfboard decorations, quick walk-up service style that’s perfect to help you make it back in time for your lunch break while enjoying some time near the ocean. While not initially seeming vegan-friendly, it was a pleasant surprise to find a new place to try. The staff was super kind and were excited to learn how I veganized one of their salad items after them telling me there were no options and what the plant based life is like. Spoiler alert: It’s great. Unfortunately none of their breads are vegan (yet), so salad is the only option for vegans that I know of to date.
What to Try: The Super Salad (a mixture of quinoa, edamame, corn, and bell pepper, topped with tomatoes, onions, sliced avocado, and feta cheese. Served with a side of lemon garlic Italian dressing) No Cheese (yep, that’s it!). This salad packed a punch with plenty of protein to help fuel me during the last half of the work day.

So far, everything I’ve tried has been beyond satisfying so I’d highly recommend just about anything on their menu. Hi! My name is Emerald May and I’m The Plant Based Bae. I was born and raised in the Midwest, and have called Southern California home for the past seven years. In 2018, I decided to switch to a vegan diet which led to me improving my overall quality of life and learning a lot about health & humanitarianism.
